Learning Grants Awarded
Tuesday January 9, 2018

Warren County is one of 29 school districts to be awarded funds through the Work-Based Learning Grant program. The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development awarded more than $710,000 to school districts that have designed programs to promote career skills and readiness among Tennessee students.
The grants will assist the development or expansion of work-based learning programs that promote career awareness and student readiness in grades K-12.


Committee Meetings

Three committees of the Warren County Commission have scheduled meetings Tuesday.
The Budget and Finance Committee will meet at 4pm for consideration of opioid manufacturer litigation. Warren County could join others in a lawsuit against prescription drug makers for contributing to the opioid epidemic. That meeting will be at the Administrative Building.
The Building and Grounds Committee will meet at 4:30 to discuss the new exit road at the Animal Control and Adoption Facility. That meeting will be at the Animal Control Building.
The Health and Welfare Committee will meet at 5pm to get reports from Animal Control and Adoption and the Health and Sanitation Departments. That meeting will be at the Administrative Building.


Gas Prices

Gas prices have held relatively steady during the first few days of the year. Tennessee gas prices averaged $2.28 on Sunday. The state average is 2 cents more than a week ago and 13 cents more than this time last year.
Prices at the pump remain elevated due to strong oil prices.
But AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said retail prices could drop 5 to 15 cents in the next month and a half while supply outpaces demand. But when spring arrives, we could see a 40 to 50 cent jump by summer.
The national average price of regular unleaded is $2.49, which is 13 cents higher than a year ago.

The Warren County Pioneers and Lady Pioneers head to Crossville Tuesday night to open the District schedule with a doubleheader at Stone Memorial. Both Warren County teams are hoping to rebound from losses Friday night at Upperman.
Tuesday night's girls' game tips off at 6pm. The games will be broadcast live on 1230 WAKI.


Lawmakers Head Into Session Tuesday

Tennessee lawmakers are returning for a legislative session colored by upcoming elections, House Speaker Beth Harwell's bid for governor and Republican Gov. Bill Haslam's final lap before he hits his term limits.
Legislative leaders and Haslam say a main focus will be opioid abuse.,
Lawmakers can't fundraise during session, so they have incentive to finish quickly. The candidate filing deadline is April 5 and the primary is Aug. 2.
Harwell is one of five leading Republicans, alongside two Democrats, running for governor.
